Thoughts from BAYGL President, Alli Agulnick, at the start of her semester in EIE: As I am writing, I am sitting in Israel, enjoying the culture, the language, the magnificent weather and of course the food. Although I’ve only been here for a month, I truly feel connected to this place, the Land of the Jewish People. I never knew much about Israel before I came here. I knew about the events that every Jewish child learns. I knew about the conflict between Palestine and Israel. I knew about the mountains and I knew about the sea. But to be honest, I didn’t know that I would fall in love with this place. I didn’t know that every step I took would be a new adventure. I didn’t know that there could be so much history in a place that seems so small compared to the rest of the world.
Now, I don’t want it to seem like I am preaching to all of you, or worse, trying to make you jealous. I am merely trying to reiterate how important it is for everyone to come to this place, at least once in his or her life time. I have never felt more safe, more alive, more speechless than I feel when I am here. Up until the day I left, people kept telling me about how much I would love it in Israel and how amazing of an opportunity I had, to be able to study in Israel, and you know what, every single one of them is correct. As many times as I told those people, “I know”, I didn’t really know. I couldn’t have really understood until I arrived here. Its one thing to have me go on and on about all the amazing things I have done. Its another for you all to witness the beauty of Israel for yourself because, come on, you don’t know true beauty until you’ve woken up at 4:30 AM to climb Masada and see the sunrise, just as I have. |
